Viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgare) is a deep-rooted flowering broadleaf species used mainly to increase functional and biological diversity in cover-crop mixtures. Its strong taproot explores deeper soil layers, while its long flowering period can provide valuable forage for bees and other pollinating insects. It is tolerant of relatively dry, low-fertility conditions and can complement faster-growing cover-crop species. Because it can persist and set viable seed, it should generally be used at a modest proportion of a mixture and terminated before seed production where volunteer plants are undesirable.
