Fava bean

Fava or field bean (Vicia faba) is a large-seeded, vigorous annual legume capable of producing substantial biomass and fixing significant amounts of atmospheric nitrogen. Its thick taproot and extensive secondary roots help create larger biopores and improve soil structure. It performs particularly well under cool conditions and can continue growing when many warm-season legumes have already slowed. Because of its upright architecture, fava bean also adds an important structural layer to diverse cover-crop mixtures.
